HOW WE BEGAN
Brown Book Box began with two mothers and friends who shared the same struggle — finding children’s books where our kids could truly see themselves. We wanted stories filled with joy, culture, and imagination that reflected the world around them.
What started as a simple idea — curating diverse books and hands-on crafts for our children — quickly became a passion project that reached families far beyond our own. As our kids grew, so did our understanding of what it takes to build confident, capable readers.
Today, Brown Book Box has evolved from books and art activities to a holistic model grounded in the science of reading and experience-based learning. Our storytimes, theatre workshops, and book selections are designed not only to nurture a love of stories, but to help every child build the literacy skills and self-belief to write their own.
We have put together a completely REUSABLE reading resource kit for little readers in K-2nd grade. The kit includes the My Reading Journey Journal, a dual-sided dry erase board with a marker and eraser, letter mad minute boards, word blending tool, K-2 high frequency sight word list, and the Oh SNAP sight word game. This kit is intended to help parents and families make learning to read fun. With the exception of the reading journal, all of the resources are reusable so families can use the kit as frequently as they need to.
The My Reading Journal incorporates reading challenges, personal growth, reading comprehension and tools for parents to help coach their little reader to identify the main idea, story setting, character traits, story sequence and authors purpose. There are 4 reading challenges and enough entries for 36 books! This journal doesn't just end either, there is a reflection section so that your little reader can see how far they have come during their reading journey.
The dry-erase board included in the kit comes with space for your littler reader to draw a picture and write a sentence with lines spaces on one side and completely white on the other. Each kit will also include one dry erase marker and eraser that can be used on the laminated tools and and dry-erase board for repeated learning enrichment.
Each kit will also come with blank pop sickle sticks so that you all can pick a sight word list to incorporate into the Oh SNAP sight word game. This game is a fun and competitive way to practice recognizing high frequency words without using boring flashcards.
